Chelsea 0-0 Southampton

The first Premier League match of 2019 did not start out how Chelsea wanted it with a draw to eighteenth place Southampton. The Blues controlled the match with 72% possession, 6 shots on goal, and 7 corners within the 90 minutes. With Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard both having good chances on goal saw Chelsea come up short with no goals.

While the first half was slow paced and showed barely an excitement or urgency from Chelsea it was a hard first half to watch as the first game of 2019 was underway. Maurizio Sarri fielded a weaker side than expected by playing Barkley over Kovacic or Loftus-Cheek. However, Loftus-Cheek did get a decent amount of playing time by replacing Willian who came off injured in the thirty eight minute. Loftus-Cheek started out a little rusty when first coming onto the pitch but soon added some much needed flair to the right wing.

Going back to Ross Barkley, this was the second match in a row where the Englishman had started at midfield and failed to produce any end product. He was quite slow and poor at following through with tackles that could have been finished off by Morata. In the end, it was overall poor performance from the midfield apart from when Cesc Fabregas was subbed on for his 500th game in the Premier League
