Chelsea vs Man City Match Analysis

On Thursday 25 June, Chelsea finished off reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at an empty Stamford Bridge for the first home game after the coronavirus pause. Beating Pep Guardiola's side 2-1 allowed Liverpool to seal their first Premier League title since 1990.

The first half of the match started fairly well with the Blues absorbing the City attack and looking for places to penetrate. The first Chelsea goal came from no other than American superstar Christian Pulisic, who beat both Mendy and Gundogan in a flash at the halfway line leaving it just between him and Ederson. Pulisic cooly slid the ball into the bottom corner as shouts of joy echoed around the empty Stamford Bridge in celebration. It was a phenomenal goal from the American and could be considered his best goal in the Premier League so far this season.

Manchester City tied the match up in the fifty-fifth minute with a sublime freekick from Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian's freekick was no chance for Kepa who watched it fly into the top corner with no effort to attempt at the save. Chelsea's luckiest moment in the game came when Mahrez played a beautiful ball into Raheem Sterling who was left one-on-one with Kepa but failed to score with the ball knocking off the post.

Moments after City hitting the post, Christian Pulisic rounded Ederson and slowly knocked the ball towards goal only for it to be cleared by Kyle Walker. Just after the clearance, Tammy Abraham tried chipping the ball inside of the six-yard box and onto goal only for Fernandinho to clear the ball away with his hand. The most controversial moment of the game went under review by VAR and saw the Brazilian sent off with a red card. This decision gave Chelsea a penalty kick to tie up the game and up stepped Willian. Chelsea's number ten slotted the penalty towards the upper left part of the goal making the game 2-1 and handing Liverpool the Premier League title as well.
