EFL Cup disaster for The Blues

Chelsea faced off against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round of the EFL Cup after a convincing 6-0 against Barnsley in the third round. The Blues were looking to continue their search for their first cup with Frank Lampard as manager. With Frank setting up a fairly strong team compared to their opposition, it seemed, on paper, that it would be a fairly easy win for the Blues.

However, the match was beyond disappointing with a several chances throughout the game where Chelsea could have sealed the win without having it go to penalties. One positive coming away from the game was Timo Werner's first goal in Chelsea colors. The German international cooly finished an excellent cross from Azpilicueta into the bottom right corner of the Spurs goal.

With the Chelsea only scoring once throughout the entire game it was inevitable that a Jose Mourinho side was going to fight back later on. It didn't look like the players wanted to kill the game in the second half while Tottenham sat back and absorbed Chelsea's attack.

Frank Lampard and the Chelsea players need to look at themselves hard after two disappointing performances this week in West Brom and now Tottenham. It seems like either a lack of tactics or motivation from the players to try and finish the game early. No doubt many Chelsea fans will take to social media and berate Lampard for his interesting player selections but some criticism must be thrown at the players in Chelsea blue.
