Hudson-Odoi and his German temptations
In the days leading up to the first day of the Transfer Market being open, rumors started swirling around about Callum Hudson-Odoi leaving to the German giants. Bayern Munich. As of today, Bayern Munich have stepped up their efforts in increasing their bid to upwards of $37.5m as reported by GOAL and various news outlets. This does not come as a surprise as Chelsea are struggling to keep the talented Odoi on their side and see if he can break into the first team.
While he does have the talent and the skill to be one of Europe's best youngsters, it comes down to what young Odoi wants. This is now the third approach from the legendary German side, The Blues are now at a struggle to hold onto the young talent's contract.
At the beginning of the season, Chelsea offered Callum Hudson-Odoi a new five-year deal but he has waited to put pen to paper as he is trying to see how much playing time Maurizio Sarri will give him. In that time since the contract was offered, Hudson-Odoi has made his Premier League debut, scored his first goal in European competition, and played several minutes in the Premier League. Sarri had shown his confidence in the young talent by subbing him on for Pedro when the talented Spaniard got injured in the match against Watford. Hudson-Odoi was Sarri's first choice when Pedro went down and played his heart out until he suffered a hamstring strain in the 85th minute.
Now that the young talent has seen plenty of minutes in an exceptional Premier League side for his age, it comes down to what Hudson-Odoi thinks his future is at Chelsea. He has been granted more minutes than most young talents at his age and was promoted by Sarri himself after a successful preseason performance.
At Chelsea's last match of 2018 against Crystal Palace, Sarri spoke about the difficulty of finding time for the young English talent. He mentioned that "He is a very good player, but now he has to improve, with the ball, he is a very good player. He has to improve his movement without the ball". He continued on praising the winger and pointing out areas where he needs to improve. Sarri spoke about how "As a winger, he has to improve in the defensive phase, but he has the potential to become a very important player, not only for English football but for European football".
Sarri knows the talent Hudson-Odoi has and wants to be able to play him more often, but struggles to find places where he could outperform the star studded lineup. Sarri wants Hudson-Odoi to be a star studded player from Chelsea's academy in the first team as he stated with examples from Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Bayern's move for Hudson-Odoi comes right after Chelsea's impressive signing Borussia Dortmund's American talent, Christian Pulisic. Bayern see this new signing as an opportunity to land Odoi in this transfer window by persuading him that they need a new young star in their team to fill in the old roles of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.
Only time will tell whether or not Callum Hudson-Odoi believes he has a future at Chelsea, which he indeed does, and if he wants to become a young Chelsea legend.
