Petr Cech could make a shock comeback after being named in Chelsea's Premier League squad
Petr Cech has been added to Chelsea's Premier League squad list as an emergency goalkeeper for the 2020/21 season.
The 38-year-old is Chelsea's technical and performance advisor, but has been training at Cobham this year, helping new signing Edouard Mendy adjust to training and life in London. Cech could make a return to action if the Blues are left in a desperate situation with Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero all out of the squad.
A Chelsea spokesman said: "This is a precautionary step due to the unprecedented conditions currently caused by the Covid-19 crisis. He takes up a position as a non-contract player."
Cech officially retired from playing professional football in 2019 with Arsenal before accepting his new role as technical advisor last summer, but has been in and around the Cobham training ground this season with his gloves back on.
Lampard has said he is pleased with having Cech working with the goalkeepers as that position has been up in the air with Kepa underperforming this season and last season.
"With Petr, he has so much give on that side of things. Of course his day job here now is technical advisor and he is a great help on that front, and that has been brilliant for me to have that since being back at the club."
Petr Cech is regarded as Chelsea's greatest goalkeeper and one of the best in Premier League history. It's great seeing a Chelsea legend like Petr Cech give back and give his experience to the current Chelsea goalkeepers.
